Laura's Acne Journey
-
How long have you experienced acne for?
"Ever since middle school, so for about 13 years."
-
What has been the most challenging part of your acne journey?
"The self-love aspect because having acne can be degrading and isolating sometimes. So, finding that self love, grace, and acceptance was very hard for me even to this day and probably one of the most important things I could’ve done for myself."
-
What has helped you gain confidence?
"Beauty, makeup, skincare, and just being vulnerable about my experiences helps a lot with my confidence."
-
What do you wish more people understood about acne?
"That it is not as simple as people may think. It is not something that just happens to teenagers or something that happens because you don’t wash your face or because you are dirty. It is much more complex than that and I wish more people understood that because I think there would be a lot more grace and less judgement when it comes to acne."
Laura's Personal Growth and Advice
-
How has acne changed your perspective on beauty, especially the standards that often exist on social media?
"Honestly, there is no such thing as a beauty standard, beauty standards are forever changing, so understanding that loving myself in the skin that I am in now would defy any new beauty standard that decided to be the new thing everyone was striving for. To put it shortly, beauty standards are forever changing so learning to love myself as I am has taught me to feel okay in my skin no matter what beauty standard is currently trending."
-
What advice would you give to your younger self or someone currently struggling with acne?
"It is the least interesting thing about you; focusing on that and making that your main focus is doing a disservice on who you are as a whole. You are so much more than your skin and that is something you should instill in yourself every single day and remind yourself because it can be very easy to forget."
Laura's Unfiltered Message
"You might not understand this now but, beauty is subjective and forever changing. Do not let the way
you feel about how you look now define who you are now. You literally are a BADDIE and you need to find the inner baddie in you and let it shine. You are a star and your acne is so minuscule compared to who you are and who you're going to be."
